K + J’s Washington Micro Wedding Filled With Adventure and Family

Anytime I get to explore the Pacific Northwest, I’m stoked. So when K + J told me they wanted to have a Washington micro wedding in the North Cascades, it was a quick yes for me! The North Cascades is one of my favorite places in the entire country (and one of the most underrated national parks to visit). The landscapes are super remote and rugged, and ridiculously beautiful. To learn all about their wedding day, including how they made time for an adventure just the two of them AND celebrated with their family, keep reading!

Family and Adventure at the Center of K + J’s Lives

If there’s one thing about K + J, it’s that they’re adventurers through and through. Exploring wild places is a HUGE part of their lives, both together and independently, so it was super important to them to include an adventure on their wedding day. But at the same time, they didn’t want to sacrifice having their family and friends there to celebrate with them.

With that in mind, a Washington micro wedding made total sense for them. They got to have an EPIC adventure together in the morning, just the two of them, and then celebrate with their closest loved ones afterward.

Keeping Close Tabs on the Snow

One of K + J’s requirements for their Washington micro wedding was a venue in the mountains that could double as an epic event space AND a place where everyone could stay. Basically, they wanted a great basecamp for their whole weekend. After chatting with them, I shared a few venue possibilities, and they absolutely FELL IN LOVE with Après Cabin in the North Cascades. It checked all their boxes, with incredible mountain views, plenty of rooms for everyone, and lots of space to party.

However, one thing to know about the North Cascades is that it stays covered in snow late into the year, and the only date the venue had available was in early July. This was right on the edge of the mountain range’s accessibility season, so I stayed in communication with them as winter progressed, watching the snow levels like a hawk. I also did some recon on AllTrails, checking comments and photos from previous years to get a better sense of what the hikes and surrounding area might look like.

And friend, the weather gods must have been smiling down on us, as there ended up not being a ton of snow. That meant both the venue and the trail they picked for their morning adventure were accessible. And let me tell you, it ended up being an STUNNING day.

The Washington Micro Wedding: Sunrise Summits, Family, and ALL the Fun

K + J really went full send with their elopement day and we wound up covering so much ground (literally, haha) between their personal adventure and time with family. It was truly so much fun to capture and witness. From a sunrise summit in the mountains to partying with their favorite people at the cabin, here’s how their day unfolded.

A Pre-Dawn Hike in the North Cascades

Even before the sun came up, K + J’s Washington micro wedding was already underway. We started with a sunrise summit hike that required us to leave for the trailhead at 2 AM, one of my earliest start times yet. And also, this hike? No joke. It was 6 miles with nearly 3,000 feet of elevation gain, so we were in for a serious uphill slog in the dark. Not only that, but it was only the second week the trail had been open for the season, which meant while we could still navigate the way, there was still plenty of snow on sections of trail. We packed our microspikes and trekking poles and made our way up in the dark.

I know a 2am hike up a mountain is not for everyone, but it was a no brainer for these two. And it is so so special to be the only ones on the trail and summit- we didn’t see another person until about halfway back on our hike back to the cars. Most of the hike is up a basin, so once we hit the summit the ranges opened up around and hoooooly Toledo was it incredible. We had 360-degree alpine views that were absolutely breathtaking, especially at sunrise when the alpenglow painted the mountains in gorgeous pink and purple hues. We even got to hear the marmots whistling, which always brings me a tremendous amount of joy.

K + J shared their personal vows surrounded by all that beauty, and they were SO heartfelt and emotional. It was such a special moment, with the incredible landscape all around us and the love these two share at the center of it all. After taking some time to soak everything in, we made our way back down and took a well-deserved nap.

Getting Married With Their Favorite People

After our break, I met back up with K + J at Après Cabin for the second half of their day. We started with their getting-ready photos, a part of the day I always love. Getting-ready photos typically happen in the morning, but given our super early start, it made way more sense to capture them later in the day. Plus, since we’d already experienced part 1 of their day, K + J’s nerves had had a chance to settle a bit and the whole vibe felt much more relaxed, chill, and easygoing.

For the ceremony, we headed to a beautiful but accessible spot where their loved ones of all ages and mobility levels could join them. And it was a truly joyful, happy, fun ceremony. Their officiant made custom prayer candles with his face on them that lined the path to the ceremony spot, while K’s niece served as the flower girl and brought SO much personality to the whole thing.

Wedding Reception Meets Summer Camp

After the ceremony, everyone headed back to the cabin to relax and hang out while the incredible Miere Catering prepped the meal (shout out for the best vendor meal I’ve ever had). Honestly, the vibe felt like summer camp, except people happened to be getting married.

After dinner, everyone moved to a nearby barn for first dances and a night of celebrating. It was the perfect way to end an incredible Washington micro wedding, and I’m SO glad I got to be there to document it all.

How Choosing Enough Coverage Opens Up Possibilities

Given how packed K + J’s day was and how many different parts it included, we opted for 14 hours of coverage. While not everyone needs that much time, having it meant they could relax and enjoy the experience at their own pace, and I had more room to get creative along the way.

One of my favorite moments happened while everyone was hanging out before dinner, when the flower girl was running around with a bubble gun after the ceremony. I suggested a fun pic of K + J kissing while she blasted them with bubbles, and it ended up being such a silly moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the day.

And that’s why choosing your amount of coverage is an important step to think through. When you give yourself enough time not just to go through your day, but to experience it at a pace that feels good to you, you allow room for those little moments and spontaneous ideas that you couldn’t necessarily plan for ahead of time. Of course, that doesn’t mean you need 14 hours of photography! Whether you’re planning a four-hour adventure or a full-day celebration, the goal is to find the amount of coverage that lets you experience your day without feeling rushed, while leaving room for a little magic along the way.

Kind Words From K + J About Their Washington Micro Wedding

K + J were so kind to share some sweet words about their experience working with me. Here’s what they had to say!

“If you’re even thinking about booking Aimée, this is your sign. She was hands down the best decision we made for our elopement. From day one she felt more like a friend than a vendor. She was incredibly kind, responsive, organized, and genuinely as stoked about our day as we were. Her communication was amazing and anytime Aimée was involved, we knew there was nothing to stress about.

On our wedding day, she was the ultimate hype woman, adventure buddy, and biggest champion…And the photos? We are completely and utterly obsessed. She is so insanely talented and has really honed her craft. Every single one is stunning, and somehow she captured our day even more beautifully than we remembered it.”
