There’s something so special about eloping in Arizona. Within this one state, you’ve got wildly different landscapes that all feel like separate worlds. Across the state you’ll find dense evergreen forests with mountain views, expansive desert vistas that stretch seemingly forever, glowing red rock landscapes, and hidden slot canyons that feel straight out of a sci‑fi movie. Truly, it’s one of those choose‑your‑own‑adventure kind of places! So if you’re wondering exactly how to elope in Arizona, let me share with you everything you need to know. In this guide, I’ll help you narrow down your options, figure out which landscapes match your vibe, and start planning an elopement that feels truly, genuinely you.
When most people think of Arizona, they think of the desert. And sure, the desert is iconic (and, fun fact, Arizona is the only state that includes ALL FOUR of the North American deserts), but this state also has so much more to offer. In the south, you’ve got the classic Saguaro desert near Phoenix and Tucson, as well as the sky islands that rise dramatically from the desert floor. Head north, and suddenly you’re in the San Francisco Peaks by Flagstaff and among the red rocks of Sedona! No matter what kind of landscape you’re dreaming about, odds are you’ll find it here.
Another huge reason people love eloping here is for its flexibility. Arizona is generally more accessible than many other western states, with several major airports and a wide range of experiences packed into relatively short drives.
You also get full control over the vibe of your day. Want to explore some can’t‑miss spots, grab a fancy dinner, then soak in a hot tub? Easily doable. Want an all‑day adventure that ends at camp under a sky full of stars? Yup, that’s totally possible too.
And if all those reasons weren’t enough, Arizona shines in every season. There’s always somewhere in the state that feels good to be in, no matter the time of year (and yes, there are spots that even give you access to snow!).
By now, I hope you’re already loving the idea of eloping in Arizona! If you’re ready to say yes to some desert magic, then keep reading for everything you need to know about Arizona elopements.

One of the best (and sometimes most overwhelming) parts of eloping in Arizona is just how many locations you get to choose from. So, if you’re feeling a little stuck, just know that’s completely normal and it’s exactly what I’m here to help with.
When narrowing things down, start by thinking about the scenery that speaks to you, how private you want your ceremony to feel, and what time of year feels right. Weather matters here, as does whether you want nearby amenities like restaurants, lodging, and shops. At the end of the day, though, there’s no “best” location. There’s just the one that fits you. And that’s kind of the whole point of eloping in the first place.
Below is a breakdown of different regions in Arizona to help you get oriented and see what might align with your vision.
Northern Arizona, including the city of Page and Lake Powell, is hands‑down one of my favorite places to elope in the entire state. It’s a true adventure lover’s paradise!
Lake Powell is wildly underrated, with endless opportunities for paddleboarding, kayaking, and other water sports. Add in expansive desert views, slot canyons that feel otherworldly, and nights where the sky absolutely shows off with thousands of stars, and you’ll quickly start to feel the magic of this place.
Because this area of Arizona is remote, amenities here are limited. But Page does offer lodging and restaurants, and you can easily pair your trip with time in Kanab, Utah. Between Alstrom Point and the alien‑looking Toadstools, it’s an incredible add‑on if you want to extend the adventure.
Page, AZ, is perfect for: couples who want a private elopement experience in an epic landscape and want their day to feel like a true adventure.

Flagstaff is another favorite, especially if you’re drawn to the energy of a mountain town. It’s also where I call home, so this area of Arizona holds a special place in my heart. The city sits at nearly 7,000 feet in elevation beneath the San Francisco Peaks and feels worlds away from the desert heat. It’s full of great restaurants, cute hotels and Airbnbs, local boutiques, and a vibrant arts scene. I’m especially obsessed with High Country Motor Lodge! It’s a dream basecamp with a sauna, pool, hot tub, and unlimited cozy vibes.
Because it’s higher elevation, Flagstaff stays cooler in the summer, which is amazing if you want to elope during this time of year. Just make sure to plan your elopement in the morning, since afternoon storms can roll through. Also, late summer and early fall are especially beautiful here when the aspens start changing color. And with Sedona only about 45 minutes away, you can easily add red rock scenery to your experience.
Flagstaff, AZ, is perfect for: couples who want mountain town charm with a cozy place to come home to.
I don’t really need to tell you how iconic Sedona is. The red rocks, the formations, the light — it’s genuinely one of a kind. If you want adventure, there’s no shortage of hiking trails and off‑roading opportunities. But you also can have something a little more mellow, as there’s plenty of scenic viewpoints where you can soak in the views without breaking a sweat.
The town itself is full of fun lodging options, great food, and cute shops, so if you’re dreaming about a day that blends light adventure with some pampering and comfort, Sedona is a solid choice. Plus, it pairs beautifully with a Flagstaff visit.
Sedona, AZ, is perfect for: couples who want a bit of adventure without giving up modern amenities.

Southern Arizona is wildly underrated, and honestly, one of the most untouched parts of the state. This area is remote, rugged, and ideal if you love camping and want a truly secluded elopement experience. The sky islands, including the Chiricahua Mountains, rise dramatically from the desert floor and feel like a hidden world. If you’re craving something unexpected, there are even vineyards scattered throughout the region (most couples are so surprised when they learn this). While less well-known than the other areas on this list, Southern Arizona is a such special place that’s full of character and unique beauty.
Southern Arizona is perfect for: couples who want to fully embrace adventure and solitude on their elopement day.

Phoenix might be one of the largest cities in the country, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice nature. There are great hikes right within city limits, plus easy access to spots like Saguaro Lake, Bulldog Canyon, and the Salt River. Pair that with endless dining, lodging, and activity options, and you get the best of both worlds.

Once you’ve picked a vibe, the next big thing to think about for your Arizona elopement is how crowds factor into your experience. I’ll be the first to admit that Arizona’s iconic spots are stunning, but they also tend to attract more people. Less‑crowded locations may not be instantly recognizable, but that doesn’t make them any less beautiful.
When it comes to your elopement, I usually encourage couples to look for places that feel a little quieter and more intentional. Somewhere you can actually slow down, breathe, and be fully present with each other. What matters isn’t the postcard-perfect photo, it’s the way you feel standing there together. But truly, there’s no “right” or “wrong” choice here. It’s all about getting clear on what feels most meaningful to you and letting that guide your decision.
Because Arizona is so diverse, you can have a beautiful elopement in any season, as long as you’re choosing the right part of the state at the right time.
Summer in Arizona is a bit of a mixed bag. Desert locations can be brutally hot (and honestly not very fun to be in for long), yet you’ll still run into crowds since it’s peak travel season for a lot of people. Higher-elevation spots like Flagstaff are much more comfortable and can be a great option this time of year. The main thing to keep in mind is the monsoon season, which usually rolls in during the afternoons and can shift plans if you’re not prepared.
Winter can actually be a really beautiful time to elope in Arizona. The temperatures are much more comfortable, and places like Flagstaff often get blanketed in snow, which is perfect if you’re dreaming of something cozy and wintery. Northern Arizona tends to be quieter this time of year, too, which means more space to slow down and really take it all in. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a light dusting of snow in the desert, which feels incredibly surreal in the best way.
One thing to keep in mind is that winter sunsets happen earlier, so it’s important to plan your timeline and activities with daylight in mind.
Shoulder season, especially late spring and early fall, is honestly one of my favorite times to elope in Arizona. The weather is generally mild across the state, and you don’t get the same level of crowds you’ll see in the summer months. This is basically peak existence for an elopement—easy-going, intentional, and all about soaking in the moment. There truly aren’t any bad choices this time of year, but if fall colors are calling your name, Flagstaff is especially stunning.

Now that you have a better idea of where and when to elope in Arizona, here are the nuts and bolts on how to make your marriage official.
Here’s a fun perk about Arizona—no waiting period! That means you can grab your marriage license and get hitched the very same day. It costs $98 and all you’ll need is a government ID and your Social Security number. The license is also valid for one year, so there’s no rush if you don’t plan to use it right away!
Along with your marriage license, you’ll need a licensed officiant and two witnesses present for your ceremony. I’m always happy to sign as a witness, and any vendors or guests you bring along can do the same. And if it’s just the two of you, don’t worry. A friendly hiker nearby is almost always more than happy to step in and help make it official!
Permits are also generally pretty straightforward in Arizona, as many locations don’t require anything additional to elope. The main places you’ll want to double-check are state and national parks, which sometimes have their own permit requirements.
Sedona does come with a few extra considerations. Since wilderness areas require prior approval from a ranger, popular spots like Devil’s Bridge typically are off-limits. The city also doesn’t allow any setups or décor when holding your ceremony on public land.
Because rules can vary a bit by location, it’s always a good idea to do a little research ahead of time. And if the regulations feel overwhelming, that’s something I help navigate when we start working together!
One of the absolute best parts of eloping in Arizona (or anywhere else in the world, really) is that you get to call the shots on what your day actually feels like. Want to spend every moment hiking together, chasing views and sunsets? Heck yes. More into cozying up in a beautiful lodge and actually enjoying the space you booked? Also yes. Maybe you’re craving something totally wild—like camping somewhere so remote it’s just the two of you for miles and miles. All of these vibes (and so many more!) are totally possible.
Timing is a biggie too as sunrise and sunset can totally shape your day. If you’re dreaming of a sunset ceremony with an epic backdrop, we can plan around that and build the rest of the day intentionally. For more popular locations, like Sedona, earlier sunrise starts often mean fewer crowds and a calmer experience overall.
At the end of the day, it’s all about what feels right to you. My goal for you is that you experience a day that actually feels like your day. If you want a little more guidance or some insider tips to make your elopement feel 100% you, check out my full elopement planning guide here.
